January 1, 2009

This is what I ate for New Year's Day, 2009.

I slept in till 11 or so, so I didn't have breakfast. I did, however, eat breakfast foods for lunch.

This is one of my favorite meals from IHOP -- they call it migas, and it's only on the menu in Texas and the Southwest. It's scrambled eggs with a little onion and tomatoes, and quite a few jalapenos, plus shredded cheese, with salsa to dump over it. On the menu, it comes with tortilla strips mixed in (yuck -- I'd have them omit those even when I was eating carbs freely, because they turn into cardboard), a big side of hashbrowns, and a couple of tortillas. I had them hold all of that, and bring me some broccoli instead of the hashbrowns, which takes most of the carbs out. IHOP's site is rather awful and won't cough up the nutritional info, but I used the About.com recipe analyzer (a great tool) to figure that this meal has about 13g carbs and about 30g protein. Not bad!

This was my afternoon snack -- a small handful of sunflower kernels. I've got about a tablespoon here, maybe a tad more. Figure 3g carbs and 3g protein.

My meals today were pretty light, and my dinner wasn't going to be all that much, so I added in a protein shake. Two scoops of whey protein, 1 cup of Hood low-carb 2% milk, some ice, and a tablespoon of Torani sugar-free caramel syrup. Totals for this are 7g carbs, 40g protein.

A light, lazy dinner. Steamed Brussels sprouts, a thick slice of mesquite smoked turkey breast (about 4oz), and a little of Emeril's Smooth Honey mustard -- it's got a carb per teaspoon, and flavor that makes it well worth the expenditure. This meal is only about 200 calories, which is why I added the shake, and it's got about 12g carbs, and 24g protein.

One of my favorite treats! This is a little chocolate bar from Target's Choxie store brand -- it's dark chocolate with cocoa nibs, and it's not a diet food so there aren't any sugar alcohols, but the whole bar has only 9g carbs (and 1g protein). It's a nice little treat for a day when I've kept my overall totals down. And you can't possibly feel deprived on any diet that's got room for chocolate.

Totals for the day: 44g carbs, and 98g protein. I'm very happy with the carb numbers; my goal is not more than 25 in any meal period, and not more than 50 per day, so I'm right in line there. I'm a little high on protein. I aim at 70g per day, although I want to miss it slightly on the high side rather than slightly low, and I'm definitely over that; I underestimated how much I'd gotten in the eggs, and probably should have just gone with one scoop of protein powder in the shake, rather than two, or even skipped the shake and had some cheese instead.
