March 30, 2009

Okay, today's food is definitely weird, because I wasn't feeling well and so I just ate what seemed like I could eat it, and didn't worry about my usual parameters as much.

No breakfast; I didn't feel like any food at all until mid-afternoon. And then I was out of the house, and hungry, but didn't want to go sit in a restaurant and didn't want a hamburger of any sort. So I had hotdogs, with mustard and relish. I didn't eat the buns, just used them as holders, but the hotdogs themselves were the cheap kind, so I expect relatively high in carbs for a meat-based product. About 8g carbs, 12g protein.

Late in the afternoon, I ate some nuts; probably about 3oz worth, in bits and pieces, although I didn't measure (I'm judging by what's left in the package, so not wholly at odds with reality). About 10g carbs, 18g protein.

And then late in the evening I was finally feeling normal, and had a reasonable dinner; Brussels sprouts and some meatballs. About 16g carbs, 22g protein.

Totals for the day are 34g carbs, 52g protein. Out of the zone, but reasonable under the circumstances.

Breakfast was... not bacon! Instead, I had about 3oz of cheddar. No carbs, 18g protein.

Lunch was at Chili's, the shrimp caesar salad without croutons. About 6g carbs, 23g protein.

And some mini Toblerone bars. 10g carbs, 2g protein.

Dinner was pizza, no crust. About 8g carbs, 50g protein.

And I also had some nuts, probably about 2 oz but I'll confess I didn't measure. About 7g carbs, 12g protein.

Totals for the day are 31g carbs, 105g protein.

The usual bacon for breakfast; no carbs, 10g protein.

Lunch at Luby's -- roast beef and two helpings of cabbage. 6g carbs and 45g protein.

Starbuck's caffe Americano, sugar-free cinnamon dolce and an ounce of half-and-half. About 3g carbs, 2g protein.

I also had a snack of nuts in the afternoon, because I was going to a meeting at which the low-carb choices tend to be limited. Good call, because there was nothing I was willing to eat there. About an ounce of mixed nuts, for 4g carbs and 6g protein.

Dinner after the meeting was Brussels sprouts, and hotdogs -- Hebrew National, which run pretty low on carbs at 1g each (also they are extra-tasty). About 10g carbs, 26g protein.

And I had a bit of 85% cocoa chocolate. 3g carbs, 2g protein.

Totals for the day were 26g carbs, 91g protein.

Still no camera, and still not quite on track from the carb binge yesterday.

I actually ate marzipan for breakfast. Pathetic. About 10g carbs, 2g protein.

And then a friend called, and I ended up going out for brunch. I was moderate here -- had an omelet with mushrooms, green onions, and cheese, ham, bacon, sausage, brisket, a broccoli frittata, and then one small cream cheese blintz with strawberry sauce and two tiny bite-sized desserts. About 25g carbs, which is high for a single meal but wouldn't have been out of line if I'd been in good shape for the weekend otherwise. About 70g protein.

After that, I managed to suck it up and stay out of the carbs. I did have some more meatloaf, about half as big as the prior pieces, and the last 2 apple muffins. About 8g carbs, 48g protein.

Totals for the day are 43g carbs (but I'm still giving this post a carb tag, because I was basically bingeing for half of it), and 120g protein.

I was on vacation, so I got to eat in some places that I don't usually eat. Lunch was at Ruby Tuesday's -- I had the salad bar, a quiche (didn't eat the crust), and some broccoli. I figure about 12g carbs, 25g protein.

I really love the sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce latte at Starbucks, but that's a pretty big carb jolt, so I tried something different -- caffe Americano with the same sugar-free cinnamon dolce syrup, and a couple ounces of half & half. We have a winnah! It's great, and a much smaller carb cost, at about 3g carbs, 2g protein. If they only offered real cream, it'd be even better.

We had dinner at a little Czech/Austrian place up in the foothills of the Ozarks, and they actually had a low-carb appetizer -- a cheese and pork plate. Great cheese, too! And then for dinner I had sauerbraten with the sauce on the side so I could control it, and sauerkraut. I'm going to estimate about 12g carbs, 70g protein.

And then I had one more muffin for dessert. 2g carbs, 5g protein.

Totals for the day were 29g carbs, 102g protein.

Hey, sorry for the hiatus. I was out of town on vacation, and then my phone (which I use to take the pictures) broke, so I have a few days without pictures, and a few earlier days where I had pics but they were stuck on the phone. I'll try to get caught up here shortly.

I started off with 2 of the apple cinnamon muffins; 4g carbs and 10g protein.

For lunch I stopped at Arby's, and had the medium roast beef, no bun, with some horseradish sauce. 3g carbs, 25g protein.

For dinner I had blackened chicken and veggies; about 6g carbs, 50g protein.

And then I had another muffin for dessert. 2g carbs, 5g protein.

Totals for the day were 15g carbs, 90g protein.

Oh, yum. For "breakfast" today, I had an oral glucose tolerance test -- 75g carbs, no protein. For what it's worth, the fruit punch flavor is better than the orange or the cola.

Fortunately, then I got to get right back on the low-carb plan; I was a little afraid that that big carb hit might give me carb cravings, but it didn't. Naked tenders and a salad, no croutons, from Buffalo Wild Wings have about 4g carbs, 30g protein.

This is the first low-carb recipe I've made from scratch -- meatloaf, made with almond meal instead of breadcrumbs. It was generally satisfactory, and definitely tasty, but it needs some tweaking before I'll be ready to post it. I had broccoli with it, so the whole meal has about 9g carbs, 75g protein.

I had the last of my chocolate muffins, for 2g carbs, 5g protein.

And then I made some apple cinnamon ones! Same recipe, but with 1/2 cup of applesauce and 2tsp cinnamon, no other sweetener. They're not perfect -- that amount of sweetening and flavoring tasted fine when I tasted the batter before folding it into the egg whites, but it turned out a little bland in the finished product. Not bad, but unlike the chocolate ones which were decadent, these taste like they might be good for you. About 2g carbs, 5g protein.

Totals for the day were 92g carbs (but only 17g aside from the OGTT), and 113g protein.

Breakfast was two low-carb chocolate muffins and some cheese; about 4g carbs, 29g protein.

For lunch I had some brisket with low-carb BBQ sauce, and some blueberries. About 9g carbs, 20g protein.

I also ate a bit of chocolate after lunch. 3g carbs, 2g protein.

Dinner was the full-size portion of pot roast at The Black-Eyed Pea; 13g carbs, 73g protein.

And I really felt like a bit of indulgence, so I went to Starbucks and had a tall sugar-free cinnamon dolce latte. 12g carbs, 9g protein.

Totals for the day were 41g carbs, 143g protein. A little over-the-top there, but not a big deal in the scheme of things.

I slept in today, so I had low-carb yogurt instead of bacon since the time to lunch was shorter. 3g carbs, 12g protein.

For lunch I had a couple more chocolate muffins, and the toppings off some leftover pizza. About 8g carbs, 25g protein.

For dinner I had a wedge salad with blue cheese, and then broccoli and prime rib. About 10g carbs, 50g protein.

And I was up late and had the munchies, so I had some beef sticks. About 5g carbs, 15g protein.

Totals for the day are 26g carbs, 102g protein.

Bacon for breakfast as usual; no carbs, 10g protein.

Still the best fast-food lunch -- shrimp and veggies from Long John Silver's. 6g carbs, 17g protein.

I knew dinner was likely to be late, so I had an afternoon snack of one of my chocolate muffins. 2g carbs, 5g protein.

I ended up having to eat at a food court; the barbecue restaurant was the best choice, with the chopped beef sandwich -- no sauce, and I didn't eat the bun. No carbs, about 40g protein.

I also ate about half an ounce of peanuts, of which I didn't take a picture. About 3g carbs and 3g protein.

That was sparse, and lunch wasn't overwhelming either, so when I got home I had some cheese, about 3oz. No carbs, 18g protein.

And I had some olives; maybe 3g carbs, no protein to speak of.

Today's totals are 14g carbs, 93g protein.

Bacon for breakfast; no carbs, 10g protein.

A little bit out on a limb here for lunch -- the weather was awful and people in my office were ordering Chinese, so I decided to see how things went. I had egg drop soup, which is low-carb unless they thicken it with cornstarch; it didn't have that glossy look or the feel you get if there's a lot of it, so I'm going to assume this was fairly middle-of-the-road. And I had beef and broccoli; there's rice in the picture, but I didn't eat it. I'm counting this as about 16g carbs and 36g protein; my pre- and post-meal blood sugars say that's about right.

Dinner I ate at Cafe Express -- I'd sort of forgotten about them, because the things I always used to eat there were high-carb, but in fact they've got some nice entrees and great veggie choices. This is the chicken Romanesco, with broccoli and spinach; the sauce is tomato and red pepper based, but I didn't eat much of it. I also had some olives. About 8g carbs, 40g protein.

Two more muffins. I can't get over how cake-like these are, with no flour at all. However, also cake-like, I would find it really easy to scarf up way too many of these in a row; they don't seem to trip my satiety switch very quickly. About 4g carbs, 11g protein.

Totals for the day are 28g carbs, 97g protein.
